1. A normal puppy (beagle) is active, eats well, has bright eyes, no hair loss from skin, no coughing, watery stools after purchase.

2. Puppy (miniature doberman pinscher) with "dandruff" and hair loss on face and ears. Do not buy such puppies or buy because you feel sorry for them.

3. Skin disease in older dog (cross bred) with long hair and thick coat, due to lack of grooming. After shaving hair, black spots indicate that infection and itch had been present for several weeks or months. Red patches indicate recent bacterial and/or fungal infections.

4. Demodectic Mange in young dog (cross bred). Hair loss around eyes, face, elbows, hind legs and body indicated widespread infection by skin mites. As it is a cross-bred guarding factories, owners usually do not seek early treatment.

5. Dental fistula in old dog. Few cases seen in all veterinary practices. Pus and wound below eye. Cause is infected root of pre-molars (4th usually) or molars. Face gets swollen but owner usually ignore such swellings until they burst with pus flowing out. Some do not burst and dog ends up with big hard swollen face. Old cats have been affected too. Dental scaling every year or two is recommended but fewer owners adopt advice. Most of them are busy with their work and have no time/car/money. Many are unaware of the bad effects of bacterial infection from decayed teeth spreading to heart valves of the dog and to throat till they start to cough badly. They can live with the "bad breadth" of the dog, tolerating and inhaling its germs.

7. Retained deciduous canine teeth - Baby fangs (pointed by scissor) behind permanent fangs (canine teeth) should be extracted by the veterinary surgeon as they interfere with biting of food. In photograph, the left baby canine had been removed and displayed on operating table on black piece of paper. Owners usually are unaware of the importance of removing retained teeth.

8. General anaesthesia of dog using mask method in Toa Payoh Veterinary Surgery to remove a foreign body lodged in eye. The other method is to put an endotracheal tube into the lungs of the dog to provide anaesthetic gas (see picture No. 6).

10. Aural haematoma in big dog (Dalmatian). All veterinary surgeons will encounter cases where the whole ear is swollen (with blood). Cause is usually due to ticks/ear mites/dirt inside ear canal and the dog starts scratching its ear, rupturing blood vessels inside skin of ear pinna. Other cause could be dogs biting each other’s ears and injury. Prompt surgery to drain the blood is advised. Some owners of cross bred ignore the problem. The ear may rupture due to scratching, get infected and ‘crumbled" up causing much pain to the dog. Rarely, one or 2 cats have this problem too. I seldom seen aural haematomas in smaller breeds.

11. Imported from USA and who seeks prompt veterinary advice and treatment. Except for occasional ear infection, it does not have any problem over past 3 years. One of the rare breeds in Singapore, it is as tall as a 6-year old child and very strong and playful. It is intelligent and does not destroy the bonzai plants and the cars. rare breed. A well-loved American bull dog belonging to one owner.
