The Golden Retriever
needs a Elizabeth Collar
"I need the Elizabeth Collar," Mr Lee said. "My
Golden Retriever keeps on licking his private part the past few days."
It was Sunday and Mr Lee would be busy with his grandchildren and his church activities.
He could pop by to get the Elizabeth collar.
"It may be a more serious problem," I advised. "Get the dog checked by a
veterinarian." Mr Lee was an old friend but he was living too far away from my
clinic, by Singaporean standards. "Far" means more than a 5-minute drive
and getting the big dog into the new car was not ideal for most Singaporeans.
I did not have much time to talk to him too but if he wanted an Elizabeth Collar, he could
have it.
Mr Lee brought the dog in with his daughter and grand child. The Retriever had an acidic
smell in its coat, something like vinegar. It was kept in excellent condition. No hair
loss. Cuddly as a bear. Good food. Nice new house. Much loved by everybody. What was
the cause of this acidic smell?
The Retriever was put on the side on the
examination table. Movements were detected in a hole at the prepuce. The yellowish
discharge around the prepuce was a common finding in some male dogs but this was an
infected area and would have some pus too.
"Maggots!" Nurse Ann said. It was instant diagnosis. Mr Lee had to remove
his spectacles as he was long sighted. His daughter preferred not to see.
"Should we just restrain the Retriever and pull out the maggots?" I asked Mr
Lee. "It would be excruciatingly painful to the dog as there would be maggots deep
inside the tissues and probably more than three. A tranquiliser pain killer would be
less traumatic to the dog." Actually, the owners feel more pain than the
patient. Mr Lee wanted tranquilisation for his dog.
Five fat maggots, each of nearly 2 cm long
were pulled out unwillingly by forceps. Mr Lee lived in one of the nicest suburbs where
insecticide fogging was done frequently to kill the denque-fever mosquitoes. Still,
the flies could not be wiped out from the surface of the earth.
The dog did not need an Elizabeth Collar. He needed help to remove the maggots. He
recovered within seven days. No discharge from his prepuce anymore and no itchiness.
