The
Maltese has pink eyelids
There
was a knock on my consultation room. A thin young man said,
"The ticketing man is here." I had never met him
although he was working with metal work three doors from my
practice.
It was really kind of him as the traffic warden, a retired man
employed by the authorities would use his portable digital
assistant to produce a ticket with a $30.00 fine for not
having a valid car parking coupon. Actually, this retiree will
make at least ten times his remuneration just by being
diligently checking on cars and commercial vehicles in the
industrial parks at odd hours and even overnight.
"Don't you drive here?" I asked the young couple of
the Maltese bitch as they did not seem to worry. It is
extremely costly to own a car in Singapore and I was not
surprised that this young couple did not possess a car.
"No,"
Mrs Chin said. "We took a taxi." I was surprised
that the taxi driver did not mind the white dog with red
eyelids being ferried in his taxi in an open bag.
A large number of
Singapore's taxi drivers are notorious for not wanting to
transport dogs as they feel that the dog may vomit or
dirty the taxi. For the Malay Muslim taxi drivers, dogs are
not permitted on religious grounds. The subway train and bus
operators prohibit the carriage of dogs and cats too although
a small dog can be secretly put into the bag. It is really
hard on the pet owners.
This had led to a new business opportunity for the pet-taxi
entrepreneurs who use vans to transport dogs and owners at
charges of around $50 per to-and-fro trip. This could be quite
expensive and hopefully the economic recession and the
impending relaxation of the number of taxi licences may
provide more taxi drivers who don't discriminate against pet
owners as customers in 2003.
I excused myself and rushed out to display a valid parking
coupon just in time. My neighbours had a good watch
group.
As to why the Maltese had red and swollen eyelids, the cause
was not obvious. She scratched her ears frequently for the
past few days but the ear canals were clean. Mr Chin had used
tissue to clean the ear flap but had not put anything into the
ear canals.
When the ears were itchy, he sprayed some anti-itch products
purchased from the pet shop onto the ears but it did not help.
Could the chemicals have been inadvertently sprayed onto
the eyelids causing an allergic reaction?
Mrs Chin had said that the bitch was around four months of
age. Yet, the bitch had light brownish discharge from the
nipples. This was a sign of false pregnancy and this bitch
must be at least six months old.
Some sellers do under declare the age of puppies as older
puppies are not so valuable.
Could the
false pregnancy cause this bitch to hide under the beds to
"give birth" and in the event, injuring her ears
which became itchy? The dust and wooden splinters may also
spread onto the eyes making them itchy too.
Was
food or the bleaching shampoo used be the cause too? Her back
thighs were very red with inflammation due to her
licking.
This was
a memorable case because the Maltese looked as if she had put
on eye pink shadows to attract attention to the big black
eyes, like some nineteen year old junior college girls going to the
discos.
The cause of
allergies in this bitch's eyelids could be due to the feed too
but I suspect this could be due to the spray. False pregnancy
would be a separate finding and would not cause pink eyes in
this bitch. In any case, an anti-allergic injection would
resolve all itchiness within 24 hours if treated early.
