You got  tenant, hamster owner?

Let Sleepy Dogs Lie.

"Dr Foo, Dr Foo, come quickly...... 2nd sister had been bitten and is bleeding!" shouted a distressed 3rd sister.

How could a sedated dog lying quietly on the floor bite anybody?

Gemini was a fearless 7-year old male German Shepherd which was sedated and left alone. He was groggy and in another 10 minutes, he would probably need another injection to knock him out so that his mouth could be opened for examination of a recurrent mouth bleeding.

The 2nd daughter of Dr Liem, a general practitioner had walked near the dog and got bitten on her wrist.

The big blood vessels were fortunately not severed. She did not cry.

Her father wrinkled lines on his forehead and his tightly closed lips, not saying a word told Dr Foo a lot.

His 3 daughters were smashers and potential heart breakers.  Now, this dog bite would not be good for this fairest of all the Teochew teenaged girls in Singapore as it may diminish her prospects of getting a good husband.

Dr Liem rushed to his clinic to stitch up the wound.

Daughter No. 3 was told to leave the vet clinic too, leaving the eldest to control the dog.

As Gemini had just bitten one daughter, Dr Foo would not want the eldest to be bitten too on this beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon.

The maximal effect of the tranquilizer had past and Gemini now had stood up.

The mouth examination would be postponed.

Dogs biting people had been put to sleep even though they did not go out to attack the human beings. The 3rd sister is 8 years old.

Would she be in danger now that Gemini had attacked his own people?

Will Gemini's owner decide on euthanasia?

Would he be autocratic or democractic. There were 3 daughters and a wife and if it comes to the vote to euthanse the dog, he would be outvoted 4 to 1. There may be hope as Dr Liem was not an autocract and big sister was the dog's real owner as Gemini was given to her as a birthday present.

There was a case of a factory dog being put to sleep by the authorities when it bit a trespasser.

It was guarding the place but it had bitten a person.

Will the same fate befall on Gemini?

Well, we must let sleeping dogs lie. Or in this type of cases, let sleepy German Shepherd dogs lie and do not allow anybody to go near it.

Xylazine tranquilization of the dog does not lead to complete knock-out. We still have to be careful with guard dogs.

"Your stitching was painful," complained the 2nd sister. She did not complain about the pain from the sudden bite of the dog.

Poor Dr Liem had had to ignore such complaints whenever he vaccinated his family members.

Dogs are like family members in a new generation of educated and well traveled Singaporeans and many of them are well loved.

As for Gemini, there was not a thought on euthanasia.

Gemini is still alive and had an eyelid abscess above his left eye on October 1. The abscess ripened and burst.

Nobody can treat him except big sister and Dr Liem.  He is strong and muscular.

German Shepherd do get skin injury wounds which attract flies.
Daily treatment of any skin wound in Gemini prevented maggots from establishing themselves into wounds.

In Singapore, such wounds need twice daily cleaning as there are still the flies which will lay eggs. Eggs will develop into maggots.

You don't see many flies in Singapore but they still cause maggot wounds in many dogs!

"Gemini is the type of German Shepherd dog who is very alert and will bark non-stop whenever strangers approach the house.  Don't worry, Gemini has no grudges against you." assured Dr Liem who had asked Dr Foo to make a house call.

German Shepherd with good conformation, no hip dysplasia.
Gemini taking a breather from his barking and observing Dr Foo outside the fence.

"Perhaps, you should chain him first," said Dr Foo. He was not taking any chance as this was one of a kind - a ferocious dog who barks non-stop.

Definitely he was not waiting to find out whether barking dogs bite or don't bite.

Definitely he would let Gemini lie tied to a leash before he entered the good doctor's residence.
