The 37 degree bitch
"AH............." A long ear-piercing scream shattered the
stillness of the night. One long scream from the cage where a bitch was
warded after the removal of her uterus but not ovaries. A scream of
death rarely heard.
I rushed to the cage and pulled out the bitch. Put her on the
consultation table and examined her mucous membranes. Her tongue was
pale yellowish white. Pupils were dilated. This was the end. I should
not have undertaken this high risk surgery.
Middle aged and fat bitches are not
good risks for anaesthesia. Their heart may fail any time. In addition,
this bitch has a rectal temperature below the normal 38.5 deg C. It was
37.5 deg C at admission and dropped to 37.0 deg C.
"Lots of dirty brown sticky discharge from her vagina. My bitch is
having a miscarriage," Mrs Chan said.
"Your
bitch is in a state of shock," I said. This was the first time I
was presented with the bitch. Singaporeans don't usually get medical
check ups for their bitches although the women do have regular ones if
they are pregnant.
How could this bitch be pregnant when she was in the house all the time
and there were no male dogs?
"She escaped for one day," Mrs Chan said.
"Around 3 weeks ago," Mrs Chan's maid confirmed.
A one night stand? Can a bitch be pregnant when she left for one night?
There is a veterinary medical condition called Misalliance. It
means that the naughty bitch had got mated and the British owner where I
used to see practice in the early 1970s, would bring her to the
veterinarian for an anti-conception injection which ought to be done
within 24 hours of mating.
