The
pug has sore shoulders
twice
Just
two months ago, this young pug was treated for a big sore of
around two inches in diameter exactly midpoint, between the
shoulder blades and had recovered. Dogs do get skin eczema
although the cause is usually unknown.
"Now, what could have caused the two sore spots above the
shoulder blades now?" I asked the Owner. The pug was
well loved as I could see his beautiful coat. He was not the high
energy Jack Russell type and should not get injuries knocking into
tables. There were no other dogs in the house and so there could
not be bite injuries. This was a recurrence of the skin
eczema in the same region. It was inexplicable.
The pug was happy but he was eager to get into his blue cage as he
knew he would get an injection or two. Some dogs will not enter
the veterinary clinic just as some children will not see the
dentist. There was an association with pain.
What was the
cause of the shoulder sores then? Will there be a third
recurrence?
I looked at the happy dog squeezing into his sanctuary. He had
caused much distress to his mistress who suffered a skin itch
whenever she handled him.
"Don't wear shorts," I said to her as the pug liked to
greet her by jumping up to her. She would then suffer a transient
skin rash and itchiness. It was one of those impractical
advices.
"The pug lives in this cage since he was a puppy," the
Owner continued as a matter of fact. I looked at this fully grown
canine squatting down inside his cage.
His shoulders were scrapping against the top and sides of the
cage. Could the answer to the problem be staring in front of my
face?
"The cage has to go," I said. The owner agreed. I should
not be seeing anymore shoulder sores from now on, if my diagnosis
is correct. If the owner had not brought the cage, I would not
have thought of it as a possible cause of skin injuries.
