"The
Corgi has smokers' lungs," said the vet
"The
vet says that my Corgi has smokers' lungs," Mr Lam said
as he creased his eye brows and wrinkled his forehead.
"He asked me whether I was a smoker!"
Mr Lam continued in a higher pitched voice, "I have never
smoked a cigarette in my life!" He was
indignant that the vet had the temerity to deduce that the
puppy's lungs were fogged by secondary smoke from him.
Mr Lam had consulted him as he had a 24-hour return guarantee
from the seller, Mr Formicelli if his veterinarian certified
that the puppy was unhealthy.
The vet (Vet No. 1) had diagnosed Smokers' lungs in this sad
looking Corgi puppy imported from Australia after taking one
X-ray. In an X-ray, normal lungs have pitch black lobes but
this puppy's pulmonary areas were a diffuse opaque network.
Smokers' lungs - this was a serious disease. Lung cells full
of black carbon particles, clogging up the respiratory system.
Choked up bronchioles. Blood vessels in the brain
rupture causing strokes. This puppy looked tired and lethargic.
Two large sad eyes. It had a slight coughing on the date of
purchase. It did not have difficulty in breathing or cough
when I saw it. Was it going to die young? Within the next two
weeks. Shouldn't Mr Lam be prudent and return the puppy
quickly?
Mr Formicelli offered to take back the puppy although two weeks
had passed and had promised Mr Lam that it would be well cared
for. In fact, it would be treated by me for the next two
weeks. That was why Mr Lam was present at the surgery.
"Mr Formicelli says you did not wish to return the puppy
which has smokers' lung. Please let me take over the puppy on
behalf of Mr Formicelli," I said on this fine Saturday
morning when Mr Lam met me. "He will refund you in full
and would pay for this consultation and further treatment for
this puppy."
Mr Lam was not happy. "Mr Formicelli says
he will give the Corgi to his staff," Mr Lam said.
"But will it die without regular veterinary attention?" I
could not assure him of this aspect as veterinary costs will
add up for a chronically ill puppy.
I thought this was a simple case of returning defective goods
sold and getting a full refund. A 5-minute consultation. Mr
Lam was not persuaded.
