The baby cat screamed all night.

"Doc, my baby cat has stopped eating. There's a lot of saliva around the mouth drooling all the time onto the neck,"
complained the young lady owner.

"Last night, she made a terrible noise, like screaming all the time"

"What's wrong with her?"

Profuse salivation in a young cat as a presenting sign.  Most likely to be oral ulceration or poisoning?  What would have caused the young cat to freak out at night?

"Did you give her tablets or medicine?" asked Dr Melissa Chua.  Some cats do salivate and some cat owners do go vet hopping in Singapore.

"No medication given.  Is she in great pain?"

The cat was examined.  Her abdomen was palpated. Not a scream from her.

"This cat doesn't scream when I examined her abdomen," said Dr Chua.

"I swear Kitty yelled all night. If there was no pain, why would she do that?" the young owner was concerned.

"Many pets don't display the signs vividly described by their owners when they enter the clinic. Lethargy or lameness would suddenly disappear."

7-month old cat with profuse salivation & halitosis

"The cause of the salivation was the big ulcer at the tip of the tongue." said Dr Chua as she priced the cat's mouth open with the thumb and forefingers of her right hand. The cat clawed her.

"What caused the ulceration?" asked Miss Chan.

"Luckily, the hard palate and the other parts of the mouth are not affected." The cat was getting very restless in being forced to open her mouth. The saliva was really stinking.

Young cat - tongue tip ulcer
No ulcers on the hard palate or the roof of the mouth.

"Kitty must have had licked something corrosive off her paws or body," postulated Dr Chua.

"The halitosis or bad smelling breadth would be due to bacterial infection of the broken mucous membranes of the mouth and possibly the lower part of the gut.

It was too painful for her to eat food as the ulcer at the tip was extensive.

Was there any renovation done in your apartment?"

Ms Chan remembered the upgrading of the HDB apartments.  The cat must have stepped on the paint and the cement as well as chemicals.

An antibiotic injection was given and antibiotic was prescribed for the next 10 days.

"But how about the screaming?" asked Ms Chan. "I could not sleep and the neighbour was not too happy with this meowing all the time, especially at night. There are Primary Six School Leaving examinations next week and I need the sleep too!"

"Kitty is mature at 7 months and wanted to go downstairs to see the tom cat," Dr Chua explained.  "Though Kitty looked small, she could be a mother if she goes out," the vet explained. "Did she go out earlier?"

"Yes, she was out for the day. Could she become pregnant?  I am glad nothing is wrong with her." said the happy Owner.

Ms Chan had to decide whether to sterilise her baby cat and if not, would the cat be pregnant?

The tongue ulcer had to heal first though.

Singapore's HDB apartments and estates are undergoing upgrading.  Cats should be kept indoors. It they wander everywhere, they may step on chemicals.

As they are clean creatures, they will lick away the contamination and  in the process, poison themselves, sometimes leading to death.
