"Two hard lumps in the mammary area in an older female cat.  Instant diagnosis of breast tumours," said Dr Melissa Chua. The 6 year old cat was 42 human equivalent years, the time when tumours are more common.

The cat would have been uncomfortable with the two lumps under the skin and during grooming to eliminate the mass, could have injured the skin.

"The two skin ulcerations might be the discharge points for the abscesses," said Dr  Chua.

"Melissa, it may be just mastitis (infection of the breast tissue) rather than tumours," said her colleague, Dr Foo.  "The female cat had been spayed but we cannot eliminate the diagnosis of mammary tumours too."

An antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injection was given. In 3 days, the swelling has reduced considerably.

"Tiger likes to escape," warned the Owner many times. "Do be careful."

The cat was taken out of the cage. Nurse Ann replied: "Don't worry. This cat is very quiet. This will be a piece of cake."

Dr Chua had closed the door of the examination room.

Tiger was quiet and did not claw or hiss.

"This is a piece of cat, I mean a piece of cake, easy to handle such a cat."

A firm grip on the skin above the neck will do," she continued.

Note the leash which will help you to catch the cat, if it escapes.

Nurse Ann lifted the cat deposited her on the examination table.  Really, it was a piece of cake.

She relaxed her grip. The cat sprang up like a tiger, leaped up to the cabinet shelves holding the drug bottles at the side of the table.

In the wink of an eye, she climbed up the big vertical drainage pipe of the operating room. This pipe was a pipe coming down from the upper floors of the 7 stories of the industrial park offices.

There was a gap between the gypsum board of the false ceiling and the pipe. Tiger squeezed into this hole and escaped into the false ceiling area above the boards.

No person can get into the false ceiling area as it will not support a person's weight.  What to do now?

Fortunately, the false ceiling did not open to the front, otherwise the cat would have gone for good.

Tiger slinked amongst the numerous twists of electrical wires in this space above the false ceiling.

There were now more worries.  How to get Tiger to come down? Would she be electrocuted?

Was it a piece of cake?  A tall ladder was needed too as the ceiling was above 14 feet high.  What should Nurse Ann and Dr Chua do? The ceiling board was taken out one by one and the cat was coaxed down by the owner. This incident shows that no veterinary personnel should not less vigilant when it comes to the feline species, whether it is a domestic cat or lion, quiet or nervous.

Well readers, the use of a leash as shown in the image in this story, is now standard procedure in cats under veterinary examination although many times, Nurse Ann would feel confident that a leash was unnecessary.
