Maltese with back eczemas and rashesTIPS TO GROOMERS:

Long-coated toy breeds, like the Maltese shown in the image on the left, are a very popular breed in Singapore.  However, they  need frequent grooming of the coat, otherwise the skin gets infected with lots of rashes, pimples and is very itchy.   Sometimes, there is a small wound beneath the thick coat. Persistent licking of the affected areas lead to wet sores.  It will be best to clip the whole coat.  The cost of clipping the coat in Singapore is around $45.00.

Yesterday was a rainy Sunday afternoon, April 23, 2000.  The groomer reduced the cost to $40.00 and went to do his work without following up.  The dog owner just walked out.  Groomers should find out and try to resolve the problem of cost.  If the owner just wants the back part to be clipped, it may be cheaper than the whole body.

TIPS TO ANIMAL DOCTORS

A 10-year old fat black terrier cross, about the size of a big daschund came to the vet with the complaints of:

1.  Screams now and then when carried.
2.  Can't lift its tail.
3.  Didn't want to walk down the steps to do its business at the grass.
4.  Had difficulty getting up on its hind legs.

It was walking normally, but salivating as it must be frightend.  Putting the dog on the examination table, Dr Foo checked its back, using fingers to press on its spinal area starting from the neck.  At the junction between the lumbar and sacral area, around 6 inches above the tail, the pressure elicited a loud scream from the dog.

What was the cause of this pain?  The tentative diagnosis was lumbo-sacral disc prolapse or some trauma to the region.  An anti-inflamatory injection was given by the muscle and the Owner was told that there would be no pain for 3 weeks.  The dog should not be made to climb stairs to go to the grass to do his business. However, the Owner said he was too heavy to be carried up and down the stairs.  It would be difficult to make him take medication.

An X-ray was advised.  The dog was sent to the hospital for x-rays.
X-rays of the lateral side of the spine revealed no abnormality.  The vet at the hospital then pressed the spine and found that there was no sign of any pain.  He diagnosed as "old age" and sent the dog home with some tablets, said the dog transport man.  The vet had been told that it was given an anti-inflammatory injection which would suppress all pain within 5 minutes.

This was the 2nd opinion and the Owner was right to have one.  Only time will tell if the dog had a disc  prolapse or just "old age" problem.
