HEALTH TIPS FOR SINGAPORE DOG LOVERS
Many conditions affect the health of the puppy. Some examples
are shown below. There are other examinations required when purchasing
a puppy or kitten. When in doubt, always consult your veterinary
surgeon.
EYELIDS
ITCHY
Puppies are very popular with children. Chihuahua.
Hair loss around eyelids leading to a "spectacled-eyed"
look is not normal for any puppy. Note loss of hair
in front of ears too.
EYELIDS
ITCHY
"Spectacled eyes" or hair loss around eyelids. This may be
curable.
Get a veterinarian to check.
HYPOTHERMIA
This Jack Russell puppy just wanted to curl up and sleep
on the veterinary table. It was purchased within 24
hours. Hypothermia (lower than normal body temperature) is
serious for any puppy.
KENNEL COUGH
On returning home, the puppy had a light watery coloured
runny nose persisting all day, just like someone with flu.
There was coughing. KENNEL COUGH in new puppies is the
main complaint of Singaporeans who buy puppies. Do
get prompt veterinary attention.
NOT EATING IN NEW HOME
Miniature Schnauzer Nikee, belonging to the Kee family
stopped
eating two days after purchase. It could be tired or
having a fever.
After being rested in a crate and adding water to the
dry dog feed, the puppy ate.
Big bones and good build are some factors important in the
selection of any puppy.
GENERALISED SKIN INFECTIONS
Boxer puppy with pimples all over the face and body and
legs. Intense itch leading to self mutilation of the face.
Skin disease cases may need months of care and treatment
costs add up to a large amount. It is best not to buy an
unhealthy puppy. Educational story at:
White footed pup not good for business?
GENERALISED SKIN INFECTIONS
The one-year Labrador
Retriever needed a
clipping
of the coat as there were too many pimples and rashes and
veterinary attention. It will not be effective to
treat with pet products from the pet shop.
ITCHY ARMPITS
The armpit rashes on this adult
Chihuahua were
very itchy 2 days after a visit to the groomer. The
groomer
was
blamed but the condition was present earlier.
SKIN RASHES & ITCHINESS
An adult Jack Russell with back rashes and pain. There are
many causes, e.g. friction from the bed frame or
rolling on grass. The dog bites when touched because it
has pain on its body.
RINGWORM
Miniature Schnauzer.
Big circular patches of hair loss is not normal in any
puppy. The patches kept growing more and more
despite one visit to a veterinarian. Skin disease
treatment usually requires more than one visit to your
vet.
SHORT OF BREATH
AFTER SHAMPOOING
The
Shetland puppy was breathless after shampooing. Owners may need
to be more careful with medicated shampoos for Shelties.
3-month-old Shelties imported from Australia sell for as much as
$1,600 in 2003 and are sold out within 1 week as demand exceeds
supply.
