Do
puppies die after Caesarian Section?
Mr
Tan's face glowed from to a deep red and a facial artery on
his lower jaw pulsated strongly as he swore: "Chee buy, chee buy, chee buy....."
He kept
chanting for the umpteenth time as he vented his fury at the
new assistant.
The teenager had taken out the the three miniature pomeranians
I had vaccinated, inspected them and pronounced categorically: "They are
males". I wanted to confirm the gender as I was filling
in the particulars in the vaccination card. Each puppy
required at least two vaccinations before sale to protect it
against the deadly viral diseases such as the parvovirus which
would cause bleeding in the intestines and death.
Nurse Ann was helping me at the breeders' farm. She was not
familiar with the Hokkien dialect as she grew up in an
English-speaking Chinese family. She asked: "Is Mr Tan
saying 'cheap buy'?"
Nurse Ann loved sales and these miniature Pomeranians would be
a big bargain.
"No,"
I said. "He was referring to the female private parts.
His assistant could not differentiate them from male private
parts and he is very angry."
"Please do forgive Mr Tan," the breeder's partner
intervened.
"He is unhappy as a veterinarian in another country had
performed a Caesarian Section on his champion Boxer and seven out of
nine puppies staggered as if drunk and then died."
"The veterinarian must have given an injection through
the vein to anaesthesize the bitch before operation?" I
asked. "The injection must have doped the puppies and
stopped them breathing."
"Yes," the breeder's partner confirmed.
Some vets prefer barbiturate injections to anaesthesize the
bitch for Caesarian section as they may not have the gas
anaesthetic machines.
The drug gets into the puppies, depress the respiratory system
and some may die soon after the Caesarian section.
The best anaesthesia is to use gas. The mother is given the
gas by a face mask. It takes around 3 minutes to anaesthesize
her.
There is practically no chances of puppies dying if the mother
is in good health. A rectal temperature check of normal
temperature will indicate that the mother is fit for the
surgery.
The
picture on the left shows the bitch woke up fast, within 1
minute at the end of anaesthesia and would be able to bond
with the puppy. The gas had been switched off as the skin
layers were stitched. The puppy was weak but it was born
alive. The other puppy was still born two hours ago, by
natural birth. If there was a delay of another two hours, the
puppy would also have died despite Caesarian section.
