How your puppy can
live longer. The mini-Maltese stopped breathing after vaccination "The mini-Maltese has died!" the breeder shouted just after putting the 7-week-old down and was now holding a life-less white body in his right palm. It was the smallest of 5 puppies which had been delivered by Caesarean section by me and had the first vaccination. Death was an injection under the backside skin with a vaccine to prolong the puppy's life by preventing diseases from killing it. The puppy was life-less now. What should be done? I opened the mouth to check if there was any obstruction to its air ways. Its heart was still beating but much faster than normal. Its tongue was a pale white as seen in dead puppies. It was comatose. There was one choice. A mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. I inhaled and then blew air to inflate its lungs. It was the first time as there was seldom any need to do so in so many years of practice. The puppy feed on its mouth was a bit sourish, lingered on my lips. I heard a snapping sound as if a deflated plastic bag expanded. Its heart was beating fast. Then I passed the puppy to the breeder and asked him to resuscitate and massage the chest to stimulate its heart. I rushed to my car to get the anti-allergy drug to inject the puppy against vaccine reaction. The breeder did blow once into the puppy's lungs. He wiped his mouth continuously with his singlet after doing it. He wiped his mouth again as there was no time to rinse his mouth. I gave the anti-allergic injection into the puppy's back muscle. There was no time for intravenous drips The injection worked fast. I massaged its chest. Its heart was beating wildly and very fast. Would it die in this fine tropical evening. A slight breeze flew in from the sea. The almost white tongue changed to a slight pink colour. The puppy was moving now. I gave it the dextrose fluid injection. The breeder was asked to give it a high energy paste. The puppy sat up. Drowsy but alive. I enquired 3 days later. It was all right and had been given proper care at the breeder's home. He believed in oxygen therapy and the puppy had some. Four mini-Maltese puppies were vaccinated at week 7 instead of week 6, but the smallest one had a reaction. Would a half dose prevent such reaction? I doubt it as all the few hundred puppies of similar size did not suffer from this vaccine reaction.
