Once you know that your Chihuahua or other breed of dogs has labour pains for over 3 hours, the water bag has burst or dangles outside the vulva, a greenish or reddish discharge is present or the first puppy has been born dead.  BOOK a taxi rather than wait for your transport people to bring the bitch for the emergency Caesarean section.

"No hope for this black and white," I stated categorically. "It took around 15 minutes to cry. The crying was weak too and therefore I don't expect it to live.'"

The breeder had turned up one and a half hours after phoning me that she needed an emergency Caesarian delivery for her Chihuahua.

I was half-way on the quiet expressway to a pet shop in Jurong Point to inspect some kittens with flu. It was a bright sunshine morning. I had rushed back to the surgery.  This was the second time that the breeder had to find transportation and took a long time to reach the surgery.

Every minute counts in an emergency Caesarian. 180 minutes were too long. The black and white Chihuahua was stressed out. No movement of life. I had given up hope for it. It would be dead, but I asked the breeder's assistant to rub its neck while I continued with the delivery of the second puppy. The assistant was an excellent sales lady. She had never been present at emergency Caesarians nor helped at whelping.

"Are you sure you want to see the operation?" I asked. "Strong men had fainted at the sight of blood present during surgery. In addition, the smells of blood and canine hairs in an air conditioned operating room overwhelms them."  

"The caesarian section is too gory for me," she said.  She left the operating room to watch from the other room through a glass window pane.  The white one was crying five minutes after the Caesarian delivery. Not ideal but it should be all right. 

The breeder did not have a driving licence. Her transport person came to work late.  So, the Caesarean delivery was delayed by several hours and the  puppies were stressed out.

Twelve days later, I enquired about the puppies.

The breeder smiled, "You said the black and white would not live. It is much bigger than the white one !"    

Their eyes were not yet opened. It would take 10 - 14 days for the eyes to open. "Chihuahuas take a longer time," the breeder said.

 NOTE TO HOME BREEDERS.  A black & white Chihuahua is not so popular with Singaporean Chinese dog buyers.

The black and white Chihuahua grew up normally and enjoyed her stay at the breeder. This case study had a happy ending because the timing for Caesareans was not too late. It may be best to get a taxi if you wish to save the puppies as each good quality 8-week-old Chihuahua puppy is worth at least $1,000. The taxi fares to your vet may be $20 at the most.

The breeder planned the Caesarean knowing that the Chihuahua bitch would not be able to deliver naturally. All puppies were vigorous.


The emergency Caesarian must be performed promptly at the correct time, before puppy distress sets in.
Puppies stressed for many hours, due to delays in Caesarian deliveries usually die before they are two weeks old. 

Somehow, they do not suckle well or they suckle but do not put on weight. They simply "fade" away within 7 days.

Every puppy's life is precious and valuable to the breeder.

One puppy was stuck in the vagina and the breeder pulled it out. It was dead. An emergency Caesarean saved this one. The quality of Chihuahua puppies from this experienced breeder was very good.
 

Natural birth will be the best, but all over the world, Chihuahuas have the highest number of Caesareans.  Most of the Caesareans at Toa Payoh Vets are Chihuahuas too.

Careful observation, history of previous Caesareans and timely emergency Caesarian deliveries are important to the canine breeder who is usually under severe cost-cutting pressures as Singapore has become an expensive city to be a dog farmer.

Home breeders may not know that many Singapore  pet shops buy the whole batch of Chihuahuas, saving them the hassles of individual marketing. The prices from pet shops will be lower usually.
