Emotions passing by may make for you a mortal enemy

"I was your mentor, remember me?" said a voice over the telephone.

Dr Foo was puzzled. The caller's name was unfamiliar. Could the good animal doctor be suffering from dementia?

How did this caller classify himself a mentor?

In Greek mythology:
Mentor is the loyal friend and advisor of Odysseus and teacher of his son, Telemachus.

In English, a mentor
is a wise, loyal adviser or a a teacher or coach.

This caller could not fit in any of the above category.  Dr Foo had lots of grey hair but certainly he was not suffering from memory loss.

He recalled meeting the caller who was the marketing manager manager.

The caller said he had been invited to the house for a cup of tea. That was over  ten years ago and forgotten.

It is very unusual for someone to describe himself a mentor when there was a brief meeting or two a decade ago.

Mentors are never ever forgotten but I guess everyone has their own definition of mentors.

Just giving somebody advices. Does this qualify you to be his mentor?

The reason for the call was to get free vaccination for his two cats.

That would be the least Dr Foo could do for his "mentor".

"Do cats need to be vaccinated?" the caller asked, getting free telephone consultation.

After all, these are stray cats and not pedigree expensive ones.

All cats need to be vaccinated to prevent viral diseases when they meet other infected cats.  Boarding kennels may have viral disease if they get boarded.

One of the caller's cats has been adopted from the SPCA and the other had been rescued from the void deck of the Housing & Development Board apartment.

The prolonged consultation over the phone was free. This was certainly an unusual case of an acquaintance calling himself a mentor. He was a flatterer by saying nice things.

What will you do reader?

1.  Get emotional. Be brutally frank and tell the caller that you do not consider him a mentor and tell him to go fly a kite? That is certainly plain and direct and you get rid of a prospective customer.

2.  Lower your vaccination fees and get the cats protected from viral diseases as well as generate revenue, though minimal, for your business?  Killing two birds with one stone?

3.  The prospective customer now wants an even lower fee as he is retired and doing charity work.  What relevance has that to do with you? You work long hours and get irritated easily.  You don't really need his business. You now say: "Go elsewhere if you can't afford the vaccination fees"?

Option 3 does let your pent up emotions pass by to the caller.

Is it a wise option if you want to remain in business for the long term as now you have already made a mortal enemy?

Controlling your emotions may  be easily said than done.

A polite "no, I can't help you by lowering further my fees as I have to cover my business cost" may be the best answer in such situations in all self-employed business.

This applies to real estate when the housing agent is asked to cut his commission to the base such that he makes losses.

Unless you want the experience or the case which enhances your portfolio, it is best to walk away from loss-making ventures but it is best not to make mortal enemies whether the income is a vaccination fee of $25.00 or $25 million.
