Be Kind to Pets. Who boxed the cat's face? Extracted from:The Glamorous Vets, Singapore. http://www.asiahomes.com/singapore_condos/9400glam.htm "Well, I have only got 2 cats," said the cat lover who had adopted 5 cats and fed others at the hawker centres. A big swelling in the right cheek appeared 2 days ago. The Malay lady loved cats and was rather unhappy when Dr Foo asked her to reduce her number of cats whenever she came with her cats. Dr Foo meant well, to save her money on the upkeep of cats. The neighbourhood do dump kittens and cats at her door step and the numbers could swell considerably. Sometimes, the veterinarian has to shut up or risk offending the cat lovers. |
Nobody knew what caused the facial
swelling as the cat did not venture outdoors. It could be a infected bee sting, traumatic injury or penetration by a fish bone from inside the cheek. The cat seemed paralysed with fear. It was given a dose of tranquiliser, the swollen area was shaved and incised around 30 minutes later. A thick characteristic yellowish-brown pus followed by red blood amounting to 10 ml was drained. An Elizabeth collar and antibiotics given. It woke up within 30 minutes. Prompt veterinary attention to such cases means much less suffering for the cat. The wound would be left to heal by itself while the area will be checked for any residual pus and blood daily for the next few days. Wound healing is usually excellent, without the need to stitch. In any case, you don't stitch up a wound which has had pus in order to allow drainage of more pus. |
