Will the miniature Schnauzer puppy die?

"

Eye was as red as blood but not obvious in this picture of a hyperprexic puppy.

Was there any contact with other dogs recently?" I asked the owner as I brought down the 40.4 degrees Celsius fevered miniature Schnauzer with an intramuscular injection. The Schnauzer had not been able to stand up and had apparently "collapsed" suddenly.

"No," she said. "This puppy has always been inside the house."

"Did you bring the puppy to the place where other dogs congregate, such as the Bishan Dog Park?" I asked.

"The puppy accompanied another dog at a veterinary practice some 7 days ago," the owner recalled. "We had to wait for 2 hours to see the veterinarian and there were all kinds of sick dogs around."

That would explain the source of a respiratory viral infection in the miniature Schnauzer. The incubation period of viral infection is from 7-10 days after exposure. Now, this puppy was showing the signs and symptoms.

"It has 2 vaccinations against viruses," I said. "It still has the 3rd booster vaccination and I hope that its resistance to the new viral infection can help it to recover."

Treatment to control the fever, prevention of dehydration and bacterial infections needed to be done. The next three days would be crucial. The puppy may live or die. Much depends on the owner's home nursing.

Puppies should not be exposed to any other dogs till 2 weeks after they receive the 3rd booster vaccination.

"Go to the veterinary surgeon first thing in the morning," was recommended by one author of a dog book I read. This case illustrated the significance of the recommendation which is rarely mentioned in most doggy care books. It is one of those wise but impractical suggestions as most Singapore dog owners tend to be very busy and seldom have time to do the morning visits.

UPDATE: 1 WEEK LATER

Puppy took 4-5 days to recover and to be active again. The owner monitored its temperature overnight at home for the next two days and gave one dose of paracetomol only. She provided the following rectal temperature readings.

4pm	40 C. Left surgery for home after anti-fever injection by vet.
6pm	38.9C
8pm	38.6C
10pm	38.6C
12 midnight	37.9C
2.15am	39.3C
4.30am	39.8C. Given 0.5 ml paracetamol
7am	39.2C
9am	38.6C
4-hourly temperature readings were less than 39 deg C and dog recovered in 4-5 days.
