Conclusion.
Costa Rhu is very popular with the Caucasian expats
who don't mind the lack of privacy as most units face opposite apartments
and the pool. The high rise blocks are built to surround a central
dolphin-shaped pool. Occupancy rate is almost 90%. Jogging track
by the river, waterfront living, the resort ambience and full condo
facilities are attractive assets.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION FOR PET LOVERS

How your puppy can live longer.
Will the puppies survive the mum's "high fever"?
"It can't be," the breeder replied
when I said that the bitch was having a high body temperature after
feeling the heat from the bitch's inguinal area searing the palm of my
right hand. "She was having a rectal temperature of 37 degrees at the
kennel."
He
had taken around 30 minutes to reach the surgery after informing me about
his intention to have a Caesarean delivery for his small-sized Chihuahua.
The bitch would have either 2 big pups or 4 small ones. Her abdominal
swelling was even on both right and left sides. I was
scheduled to spay a black cat and quickly postponed the surgery when he
phoned. It was always good for any breeder to inform the veterinary
surgeon early.
He was a professional canine breeder and knew when his bitches needed a
Caesarean in most cases. A change of behaviour, loss of appetite,
loose stools and a rectal temperature of less than 37 degrees. And being
present at the right time for the bitch.
Now, the Chihuahua was having an increasing temperature. Shooting up fast.
There was no time to waste as the temperature jumped past 38.5 degrees C.
No time to wait to see what the reading would end. The breeder wanted
speed, not temperature reading.
The
first two puppies were jammed at the uterine body and it took some time to
extricate them. One was head presentation and the other was backside
first. The first puppy cried softly. It was just ripe. The second
one was quiet. All 4 puppies were handed to the breeder and his friend
after I clamped and cut the umbilical cord and removed the amniotic sac
membranes. Both professionals and knew what to do.
The attractive good-sized large Chihuahua puppies were like fine works of
art and the breeder appreciated them. This was an excellent litter.
Would the 4 pups survived the next 7 days or the next 14 days. A high body
temperature of the bitch, if prolonged, usually kills the pups within 3
days after the Caesarean.
"At what temperature would it be risky for the pups?" the breeder asked.
"Above 39 degrees C," I said based on my experience. "Pups seldom survive
past 3 days." I hope these 4 pups would not be affected. Only time
would tell.
If
he had timed his Caesarean section two hours earlier, knowing very well
that this bitch had a small size and pelvis, he would have no worries.
Breeders always hope that the bitch can deliver naturally as that would be
the best option. However, Chihuahuas tend to have a higher need for
veterinary help and a timely elective Caesarean usually result in puppies
living past 14 days and a contented mother not distressed. If the
Chihuahua bitch is small in size and the pregnancy showed more than 2
pups, an elective Caesarean section is unavoidable if the breeder wants
live puppies. Unfortunately, it is not always so easy to judge.
Life is always full of learning experience for the professional breeder
and no two cases are alike. Unfortunately, many breeder need
learning experiences mean financial losses. Is there any other way to
learn than getting deaths of beautiful puppies distressed by delays in
seeking veterinary help?
33 hours later, the puppies were all vigorous and well fed. I expect them
to survive past the 14 days. The mother was apprehensive of me. Her
ears flopped down as she watched me cautiously. She would not bite but she
was worried for her puppies. Or she could recognise me as the one who put
her on the operating table. I felt a warmth that the new lives will
flourish and that the breeder had been prompt in seeking veterinary
assistance.
