Challenging the teacher to
a duel.
"He is a teacher and he shouldn't slam the door on my husband1"
The wife of burly looking husband was trying to explain to around 20 by-standers
including myself.
"You come out. How much do you want?
You think I have no money to pay you?"
The shouting father flashed a wad of Singapore dollars while his 12-year old daughter
inside the classroom was sobbing incessantly at being humiliated by her hot-tempered
father.
All the Hokkien vulgar words expletives were shouted at the teacher who could not close
the glass louvered windows of this ground floor tuition centre.
"I can fight with one hand tied behind my back. Come out, come out, you coward, s.ob,
........!"
the one-sided shouting continued.
The girl in the HDB apartment upstairs discontinued her regular skipping in the living
room.
A big crowd was present but this embolden the angry husband in T-shirt and shorts to shout
more, challenging the teacher to a fight. Any style of kongfu, he said.
This was a 2000 scene in Singapore's oldest estate, a Singapore having arrived from
"Third World to First".
The PAP Education Foundation kindergarten usually located at the ground floor of many
estates was used as a night tuition centre for any student and teachers were usually the
dedicated type as many Singaporeans would not want to work 5 evenings a week? The
enrolment was not high though.
My older son wanted to see more action, but I drove
him to the neighbourhood police post in Lorong 8 as it seemed the situation seemed to be
getting out of control. |
Apparently
the teacher had called the police and was now trying to teach under the swirling ceiling
fans in this aging block of Toa Payoh.
Yet the verbal harassment continued through the glass window panes for around 30 minutes.
My son needed the tuition as he was taking his final Primary Six School leaving
examinations and the results would determine which good Secondary school he would be going
to.
One-to-one tuition in Chinese costing $300 per month resulted in a failure for the
mid-term examination.
Now, $80 per month for 3 subjects 2 evenings per week but no charge for additional classes
on some public holidays.
Was this a rough neighbourhood? I better take out my younger son from the tuition
class. But Toa Payoh was no more the notorious "Chicago of Singapore" as it was
known 30 years ago.
My son was very upset when he heard he was to be taken out of the tuition class when I
mentioned that.
He actually wanted to go early to attend the tuition. The teacher had motivated him
to learn.
"Don't come till I call you," my son said as he obviously did not want me to
take him out of the class as he enjoyed the learning there although it would be 9 p.m and
most Singapore children would be at the television or playing computer games.
What caused this outburst from the angry father then?
Apparently, the tuition teacher was asking him to pay the fees and he said he had paid but
was never given the receipts.
No parents ever got receipts. When I asked my Jonathan's mother about this, she said
the tuition teacher did ask her to pay up, forgetting that she had paid.
Therefore, this angry father must have felt insulted that he was asked to pay and pay at
this PAP Foundation tuition centre.
(PAP actually stands for People's Action Party, the dominant political party in
Singapore).
Keeping proper accounts is very important in any small business.
Giving receipts will be the best method of monitoring your cash income and it is a form of
advertisement of your business too as clients will tend to keep receipts for reference.
This receipt will contain your contact information and sometimes given to new
referrals leading to more business for you. I presume you work hard to grow your
business.
If the teacher had given receipts, this incident would not have occurred. The
consequence resulted in a loss of income too as the sobbing girl had to quit the class
after the fracas. A receipt would have not provoked this ugly side of some Singaporeans.
