In 2003 -
2006, I was kept very busy with Caesarean sections from many various
dog breeders in Singapore. Digital pictures of most cases were put
on toapayohvets.com to
enable me to research and review the diverse case problems and
solutions.
It was a crazy sleep-deprived period as Caesarean sections happened
past midnight. Some clients did not turn up while I waited at the
Surgery waiting in the eerie isolated surgery in the neighbourhood
of undertakers.
Fees charged were $250 per Caesarean section irrespective of the
time, complexity of surgery or the number of pups. Caesarean
section is generally advised when the dam looks distressed
and cannot give birth after 2 hours of labour/between pups.
For Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers with dystocia, a delay of >2
hours usually results in the death of pups. Each case is different
from another. Obviously, if the sire is large or there is the
single-pup syndrome, elective Caesarean section is prudent to
save the pups and reduce distress and death to the dam.
See your vet earlier if a water bag is seen but no pups are born
and/or there is a green vaginal discharge. It takes at least an hour
to get to the vet and to start the surgery. Phone your vet early.
Dams die of septicaemia when the pups had died and decomposed due to
delays, despite Caesarean section. A foul stench is usually present
when the breeder had delayed for several hours.
I hope these pictorial narratives may be of use to young practising
vets, home breeders and puppy buyers surfing the internet - Dr Sing
Kong Yuen - April 12, 2008.

HOW TO SELECT A VIGOROUS
PUPPY IN SINGAPORE
Handphone pictures are not that good but in the 2008 case below,
I forget to bring along my digital camera. So I used my
handphone was used. The pups grew up magnificently. Pics 1152 -
1160 gives you an idea of how to select a vigorous puppy. |
|
|
1075.
65th-day Miniature Schnauzers delivered by Caesarean section.
Inverted nipples in this first-time dam. Help puppies to suckle.
Milk released soon after oxytocin injection was given.
|
1076.
Unbelievable. Four 65th- day pups with long nails can
still be alive! Normally 58th day birth for this breeder. |
|
It was one of those
money-cannot-buy joys to see the Caesarean pups again at 6 weeks
of age when they come in for their first vaccination.
Each has his/her own temperament, just like small children.
I have presented a pictorial narrative on how to select your
puppy in Pics 1152 - 1160 below. |
1077.
Dam growled at the vet. May bite puppies. Overdue puppies cried
before the umbilicus is clamped! |
|
|
1152.
Selecting a puppy. Put pups on a flat surface or
table in a new environment. Watch their behaviour. Note the
active one (3rd from left) not afraid to explore new areas.
|
1153.
The active one is carried before he leaps off the table. His
sister is cautious (2nd from left). |
|
|
1154.
I advise the breeder to put the active one (2nd from left)
in between his siblings. |
1155.
The active one hears whistling sounds from a welder on his
left as my surgery is in an industrial park area.
|
|
|
1156.
The active ones goes to investigate and may fall off the
table. |
1157.
The breeder catches him. |
|
|
1158.
He is now on the left and gets distracted by me calling him.
The sole female is 2nd from the left. |
1159.
The active one looks at some noises to the right at passers
by. The 2nd most active pup is on the right. |
|
|
1160.
He goes exploring again, taking risks of falling off the
table. This pup will be the best buy due to his vigour and
size but he is likely to dominate you. |
