| December 31, 1999 Big living areas. $6000 is a good budget for a downtown 3-bedroom condo, but it is tough to find a new condo with a large living area. The newer ones don't have the big living and dining spaces. For example, Aspen Heights, a hot Caucasian favourite. The 3-bedroom units are below 1500 sq. ft. The 4-bedroom of 1600 sq. ft has small bedrooms and living areas because 4 bedrooms are squeezed into a 1,600 sq. ft floor area. Expats may be discouraged from using outside realtors as many large corporations have their own panel of realtors. Check with your company human resource department or negotiate this freedom of choice of realtors in your contract. This case is unusual in that the senior human resource manager treated this Japanese expat humanely by permitting him to use an outside realtor. It was extremely difficult to find a desired renovated 4+1 residence of 3,000 sq. ft with big balconies for $4,500 near Orchard Road. A documented letter from the Realtor with supporting evidence of great difficulty in finding such a place was helpful too.
