How Your Puppy Can
Live Longer
When the breeder gets the correct situation for a planned Caesarean
section, the puppies cry and breathe immediately on delivery and are
vigorous. The bitch is not stressed out.
Just in time puppies
When should the breeder elect to have a Caesarean section for small breeds
that cannot give birth naturally? The objective is to get vigorous
puppies and a happy un-stressed mother?
Careful observations and experience counted a lot. In the situation of Which puppy to
save?, Mr Lim chose his time to get his bitch to the veterinary
surgery for a Caesarean. He had 2 dead puppies owing to the delays. It was
not easy.
Now, he had phoned me for another Caesarean delivery. "Doc, I need another
Caesarean. The bitch's temperature is 37.1 degrees and had passed watery
diarrhoea."
"Please come early," I advised.
Mr Lim was at his canine breeding farm when most Singaporeans and other
breeders were still asleep or waking up to get to work. By being
early, he could check on the labour pains of his bitches and take
immediate action. That was a reason he was the top successful canine
breeder.
He had a problem which most breeders do not have. But would like to have.
He had surplus good quality puppies and needed to find buyers in this
economic downtown after Sept 11, the Iraqi war and SARS.
"Do come early," I said. I would like to see all pups live after a
Caesarean delivery as it was a joy to see them. Breeders are very happy
when they go home with 100% live puppies and this was good for the image
of the practice too.
Vets don't want to be branded as delivering dead puppies and most times,
the deaths are due to delays as the breeders want to save on veterinary
costs. Still, the word gets round that the vet delivered dead
puppies.
The fit Chihuahua bitch took more than 10 minutes to go down under gas
anaesthesia. Weak ones sleep under 5 minutes. Mr Lim went in and out
of the operation room to check on the status.
Like an expectant father.
The bitch just would not be anaesthesized that easily. It happens when the
bitch is in top health. She would use her front legs to pull away the
anaesthetic mask, to struggle, sometimes wag her tail and cried loudly.
I would like to give her a tranquiliser first but the puppies might come
out sleepy or weak.
Once she was under anaesthesia, I took out the puppies one by one. There
was no contractions like the ones in
Which puppy to
save?. Mr Lim and his partner had ample time to revive the puppies.
Actually, they did not need to do much. Just as I ruptured the amniotic
sac and released the fluid, the puppies wriggled. They opened their mouth
and cried. Just like fruits which are just ripe.
Still, the fifth puppy's neck was flexed downwards. I had to put my index
finger deep into the uterine horn to hook out the head. To squeeze the pup
out. The pup was equally as ripe as the others.
"The fatty tissues (omental fat) had adhered to the side of one uterine
horn," Mr Lim observed. "The vet who did the first Caesarean had not
stitched the womb properly. Can you removed it?"
"No," I said. "The fat had sealed up a large portion of the uterus. That
part had thinner walls and would have ruptured if the bitch had given
birth naturally."
This was the second Caesarean. All 5 puppies were vigorous and should live
past the critical 7 days. The mother was an excellent one and was very
alert.
This was a rare case when all puppies were just in time, just ripe to see
the new world! The bitch had milk present and the puppies wasted no
time suckling.
