Tough being a New Economy Husband?
Young American couple, no children relocating to Singapore. Touched down on
Singapore on August 27 2000 night, all the way from the U.SA.
House hunting whole of next day with 2 different realtors. Day after that too. Walked and
walked, trying to keep awake as jet lag drifts into the weak body.
Wanted:
*Unique Singapore home, like a loft apartment or the heritage conservation shophome.
*Budget not more than $9,000.
*Don't need pool or garden.
*Must be away from busy roads.
*Near subway as no car will be provided by the company.
*At least 2,500 sq. ft of living space.
*4 good-sized bedrooms.
*Separate living and dining areas.
SIXTH AVENUE VILLE

*Modern, new bathrooms with a gleaming white jacuzzi or ordinary long bath and a shower
stall.

SIXTH AVENUE VILLE
PRIVATE TERRACE OVER 300 SQ. FT
The wife decides that only downtown Orchard
Road location will do. The husband has no objection.
Over 60 of Singapore's best houses and condos from $9,000 - $14,000 were seen.
Rooms too small, too near a busy road. Bathrooms worn out. Kitchen not
enclosed in one heritage conservation house. Living area too small and bedrooms too
small in a penthouse with a roof terrace plus jacuzzi.
Suddenly, a recently renovated Emerald Hill shophouse over 4,000 sq. ft of built in
area fitted the expats' specifications. However, another expat had offered $13,000.
The husband did like a new hilltop 3-bedroom penthouse with a large private terrace of
over 300 sq. ft providing gorgeous views of the city and green trees. Pastel
coloured interior finishes and city breezes slamming unclosed doors.
"Can you rent an office?" he asked? No problem getting an office in Singapore,
the realtor said.
Actually he was asking his wife the question. She is a very ambitious agent,
frequently on the mobile phone talking about contracts.
But fortunately for the realtor in attendance, she was not in real estate to compete.
"I am sorry I don't want to go to the office at night," said the wife in a firm
tone. She has to make telephone calls from the U.S and the Americans in Seattle are
awake when Singaporeans are settling to go to bed. Therefore, a 4th bedroom will be useful
as a home office.
Is there such a thing as a civil reprimand? It's sure tough to be a relocating
husband nowadays.
