Consult your vet when ear abscesses are
very small. An extremely difficult surgical case to treat.

Day 2 after surgery. It costs the owner a lot of money as the delay
in seeking treatment for this hamster meant double surgeries and a long
hospitalisation stay. For pet hamster owners, any veterinary fee over $100
appears to be costly when they can buy a new hamster for $20.00. In this
case, the total veterinary costs were around $250.00 on subsidized rates.
The hamster survived two anaesthesias and is still alive and kicking.
Details of the case study is at:

2009. The case of the
wood-shaving-injured hamster
As the hamster is so small compared to
dogs and cats, some cases of foreign body injuries are missed. Digital
images may help or use a microscope. In this case, the digital picture
revealed a piece of wood shaving being lodged near the penis.

hamster
Delays in seeking veterinary
treatment is part and parcel of veterinary practice. Sometimes, the
parents just do not have time or want to get the hamster treated. After
all, the veterinary fees may cost more than the purchase of 10 new
hamsters. But such a mindset is sadly prevalent in the older baby-boomer
generation of Singapore parents. With the new generation, the pet hamster
is family and therefore, such calculating personalities seldom exist in
the younger generation for whom their pet health is paramount and not
replacement new hamsters.
