"A group of men with machetes hacked at the BMW.  He knew it would be the end of his life.  The mob wanted his mobile phone and was smashing the BMW to break in.   There was the notebook and they would surely kill him!" An American found in the wrong place at the wrong time.   

All because his driver took a wrong turn in Jakarta and ended in a wrong district.   This sounded like a page from the Grisham novel of an American who turned into the Bronx in New York city and was set upon by thugs.  I just could not believe it but it actually happened in February 2000.

Was he hurt?  "Wind down the windows a bit and throw out the damn mobile phone!"  The mob rushed for the phone and the American expat escaped death.  

All started when I asked why the husband did not start his own business since he worked so hard.

"He has flown 3 million miles on NorthWest, excluding Singapore Airlines, KLM and the others."

"He comes back on Friday and flies off on Sunday.  This is not a marriage.   The children just say hi dad and communicate by phone most of the time"

"He called me from a hotel in Korea to say he was having chest pains".  He could have died of a heart attack.

At 50 years of age, husbands should retire after reaching the pinnacle of his world-wide career.  Forget about luxuries and get back to the USA to spend more time with the teenaged kids who now have no time for you.  If there is no money, let the teenagers go out to work rather than go to the university.  With one heart attack, shouldn't the husband retire?

Why not retire?

"He wanted to resign and let a younger man take over, but the Chairman asked him to help out. That is why we are in Singapore where the flying hours are fewer than in Japan".

There never seemed to be enough time
to do the things you like. 
If only I could make the days last
and spend the time with you. 
And never give you reasons to cry.

Workacholic husbands in top management positions do not usually retire at aged 50 years.   If they do so, it will be an early death for them?  Long ago, there was love but now the husband is not really home.  Holding hands together, walking in the woods and re-discover the love which had been lost in the past 15 years?  How do you get the husband to do what you want?  Do you want your children to go to the top universities?  Without money from the breadwinner husband, your children will not be able to make it to the university unless they are exceptionally brilliant and can get scholarships.

Therefore, the only solution is to let go of the materialistic demands of life and retreat to the mountains?
