There are lots of suggestions and estimates contributed by hobbyists
living in different part of the world and environments. I use the 20
gallon per lbs of fish consideration combined with a simple test.
Fish length average weight in lbs.-
- 6 inches 2 ounces
- 12 inches 8 ounces
- 14 inches 1 lb
- 16 inches 2 lbs
- 18 inches 3.5 lbs
- 20 inches 5 lbs
- 24 inches 10 lbs
- 30 inches 25 lbs
- 40 inches 50 lbs
Example:
A 100 gallon tank can keep up to 5 koi of 14" in size each. Consideration
No.1:
Conduct ammonia and nitrite tests. If any of these level are high,
your filter system is not able to handle the current stock level,
resulting in "over crowding".
Consideration No. 2:
Feeding habits. If I am one guy who loves to overfeed my koi,
I will use 40 gallons of water for each pound of fish for calculation
instead. If you need more information regarding
transportation outside Singapore, you may drop me an email or post
your question at the koi
forum. |
