Pet owner education card No. 29. HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL BREEDER.  2-3 hours after the last pup and no more appear - go for Caesarean delivery if you want to save your other puppies.  © ASIAHOMES.COM   20 May 2004. Case study: http://www.asiahomes.com/singaporeaur/0532condos_East.htm

RIGOR MORTIS IN THE PUPPY
"You had waited much too long to request for a Caesarean delivery," I reprimanded the breeder. Extricating a dead but healthy puppy that should have lived, was the saddest thing in the world for any veterinary surgeon.

"The 4th puppy was in rigor mortis, meaning that the body became rigid after
death as the muscles contracted, locking up the joints. The puppy had passed meconium (stools) and had a flattened head as it was stuck before the cervix. It must have died 12 hours ago!"

Rigor mortis starts from 10 minutes to over a few hours after death. The rigor mortis started from the puppy's face which was stiff. Its nose was purplish instead of being bright red, as its blood supply was deprived of oxygen.

"It is only 6 hours," the breeder mumbled. Six hours?  I said nothing. I expected a much higher standard of care of his dams from a top professional canine breeder.  I dislike delivering dead puppies that should have lived.

Rigor mortis in puppies harms the reputation of the veterinary surgeon insidiously. In rigor mortis, the incision in the womb  had to be three times longer to extricate the stiff rock-hard body of the puppy.

The mother might not conceive again if the cervix was scarred. The mother might die a few days after the Caesarean section.  The vet would be blamed for causing the infertility due to his "incompetent Caesarean section" in making such a long incision. In this case, the dam died 3 days after the Caesarean section.

The breeder had manipulated with his hands and fingers, the 2nd and 3rd puppy out of the womb, but he did not mention this. I could see the red tissues of bruised skin on the top part of the vulva caused by the fingers digging the puppies out and had asked him about this procedure. Pressing the womb hard to help the dam give birth naturally would have caused internal injuries to the mother. This would be one cause of her death after the Caesarean section.

To other breeders, the dam had died due to the "incompetent" Caesarean section. And the vet would be blamed for the death!   What happened to the first 3 puppies?  All died within 2 days. Therefore, the breeder who has passion for his profession and loves all his dogs, had lost not only 4 puppies, but a very beautiful Chihuahua too.
