Apartment Puppies
in Singapore - How Singaporeans care for their puppies.
Hypoglycaemia in Chihuahua puppies.
The puppy
is sleepy and staggering. Treat it immediately before it becomes
comatose and dies.
"My 6-week-old
Chihuahua puppy is active, but he shivers, becomes drowsy, staggers
and has fits at least once per day," Groomer Ken said. "I have
discovered a cure that my vet who had seen him a few times had not
thought of!"

Only 2 puppies delivered
Groomer Ken expected all vets to know everything about all animals. He
had no university degree unlike veterinarians and graduates were
supposed to be cleverer.
This was the first time I had met him at his new pet shop.
Ken's description of his puppy suggested hypoglycaemia. The
puppy's body was unable to store glucose or did not have sufficient
amounts of glucose. The body then used fatty stores as a source of
energy. These fat were broken down into fatty acids which were
released more than they could be metabolised. These became ketones
which accumulated in the blood and the brain.
Ketones are toxic. The owner would notice a loss of appetite,
inactive and sleepy puppy. There might be vomiting. Coma and
death followed soon.
As I was not present when Groomer Ken's puppy was treated, I did not
want to offer unwanted diagnosis. In any case, Ken had the
solution. "What is your secret of success?"

Groomer Ken said, "Every morning, I give the puppy half a teaspoonful
of honey. Half an hour later, I gave it the puppy food soaked with
warm water as he cannot chew properly. At lunch time, the same
procedure."
Ken beamed, "Whenever, he looks sleepy, my maid will give him honey
and his problem is resolved. Cheap and good. A penny saved is a penny
earned."

6 vigorous Chihuahua puppies
delivered. The small one (right) was very small and did not survive
past day 3.
There are more cases of Chihuahuas suffering from hypoglycaemia as
this breed is not easy to care for by the first-time dog owner.

Usually, the pet shop recommends two feedings a day for a puppy 8 - 12
weeks old. One feed when the dog wakes up and one in the
evening.

In my practice, I
note that chihuahuas around 7 - 10 weeks old have the most complaints of hypoglycaemia from first-time dog owners and some pet shops. Some do
die.
The cause of hypoglycaemia may be loneliness (missing its
litter mates and not eating alone), climate changes (cold, breezy
balcony), vaccination (breeders usually sell one week after
vaccination), illness or new type of feed (different from the
breeder's) or feed taste (pet shop's recommended supplements).
PREVENTION.

1. Children would want to play with the new puppy even
though it is resting. I know of a case of a family with 3 children
less than 10 years old. The puppy just does not have sufficient
rest as each child wants to play with the puppy at different times.
Puppies lose their energy reserves as they play for a longer time. In
the night, the puppy becomes lethargic. The parents have to
regulate play time.
2. Make sure that the puppy likes the feed formula you are giving. Do
not to switch to a new diet immediately after purchase. The puppy may
not eat it. Adopt the seller's recommended feed for the first 2 - 4
weeks.
3. Keep the puppy in a small cage or play pen so that it does not
spend much energy moving and jumping.
4. Leave feed overnight for the puppy. Most owners are advised
that the feed should not be left all day in Singapore's hot and humid
climate as the feed will become bad. However, some Chihuahuas
are slow eaters and may require feeding three times a day instead of
two. The problem with working couples is that there is no mid-day feed
as nobody is home.
5. Make sure that the ambient temperature is correct for the
puppy. If it is cold, the puppy uses much of its energy to keep warm
or avoid the hot sunlight. It then develops hypoglycaemia. Many owners
place the puppy in the balcony which may be breezy or too hot.
6. Some puppies, like Groomer Ken's puppy may not be able to
store glucose till they are over four months old. These are rare
cases but they do need special feeding attention. If not, the puppy
gets seizures and coma and dies if it does not get the blood sugar
level up.
7. Make sure that puppies less than 4 months old suffering from
hypoglycaemia are not deprived of food more than 4 hours.
By 5 - 7 months of age, hypoglycaemia is no longer a problem with
Chihuahuas.

4 out of 6 puppies grew up to
8 weeks. Dec 7 03. Puppies for sale at pet shop.
7. Put half a teaspoonful of honey or sugar solution into its
mouth when it looks tired. The puppy will recover fast.
Chihuahua puppies less than 10 weeks of age are easily stressed. When
stressed, they don't eat. They become hypoglycaemia and sleepy.

All breeds of puppies may encounter hypoglyaemia. If the
puppy does not recover within 10 minutes after you have given the
honey, consult your vet immediately. It may be having infections,
hydrocephalus, fever or other illness.
